Over the past couple of years, I have traveled to three different safari lodges in South Africa and Kenya (Ulusaba, Mahali Mzuri, and Serengeti Under Canvas). It is here that I became aware of the plight of rhinos, and the imperative nature of their preservation and protection. The statistics concerning their rising death toll is alarming to say the least: in 2012, almost 2 rhinos a day were killed in South Africa alone! This is not sustainable.
This rapid diminishment of the rhino population is driven in large part by poaching. That is to say, rhino deaths are not only entirely preventable but also of a violent and inhumane nature. After the horn has been hacked off, the animal is left in excruciating pain to bleed slowly to death.
